30TH CELEBRATION · COLLECTOR NOTE
I wanted the Pokémon 30th Anniversary ETB too—just not for $150.

The Pokémon 30th Anniversary release had me tempted too. I just did not want in badly enough to pay a launch-week panic price.
When a product disappears fast and everybody is talking about it, it is easy to feel like you have one chance before it becomes impossible to find. That is the feeling I try not to spend money on.
The chase card made the hype feel real
The early conversation around Gengar ex was a perfect example. It was being talked about around the $250 range when excitement was at full speed. That makes people feel like they need to rip packs immediately, pay whatever a box costs, or buy the card before it climbs even higher.
Then the price cooled off. That does not make Gengar ex a bad card, and it does not make anybody dumb for wanting one. It shows how fast a new Pokémon card price can move when people are chasing the same thing at the same time.
Waiting is not missing out
I am not pretending I did not want an ETB. I did. But I also knew that a brand-new product at peak hype was probably going to be its most expensive moment.
More packs get opened. More copies show up. More people decide to sell. The market gets a little more honest. I would rather watch a card than panic-buy it.
There are still more 30th Anniversary product waves ahead. I am keeping an eye on the ETBs, but I am not rushing back in unless the price gets much closer to MSRP. If it never does, I can live with that. There will always be another set, another card, and another chance to find something cool.
Check the price, then check yourself
Before paying a launch-week price, ask a few simple questions. What was the original retail price? Is more product expected? Are you buying to open, collect, or flip? Would you still feel good about the purchase if the price dropped next month?
For now, I am happy watching the 30th Anniversary market settle down. The fun part is still there. I just do not need to pay the panic price for it.
