Card scanner & price checker FAQ

Everything about checking a card’s value, scanning graded slabs, and deciding whether to grade — for Pokémon cards.

Checking what a card is worth

How much is my card worth?

Take a clear photo of the front of your card and tap Identify & price. OpenAI reads the card details, then the app looks for a matching Pokémon market price through TCG API. Check the exact set, number, and printing. Unmatched cards show No verified price. Guests get 35 free scans.

Is there a free Pokémon card price checker?

Yes. The same scanner works as a Pokémon card value checker: photograph the card and it identifies the Pokémon, set, card number, and rarity, then shows the current market price. Your first 35 scans are free.

What is the app that tells you how much your cards are worth?

Collect Valor is a web app — open collectvalor.com on your phone, snap a card, and see its value in seconds. Because it's a website rather than a store download, it works on iPhone, Android, and desktop, and updates instantly.

How accurate are the card values?

Pokémon market prices come from TCG API. Accuracy depends on matching the exact card and printing. Check the set, number, language, and variation before relying on a value. Use Search by name to choose a different match. Values are market references, not formal appraisals.

Where does the pricing data come from?

OpenAI identifies cards from photos. TCG API supplies Pokémon market prices and market-price history from March 2025 for matched cards. Graded pricing, condition-specific pricing, and individual recent sales are currently unavailable.

What does "raw" mean for a trading card?

A raw card has not been professionally graded. Collect Valor currently supports raw-card pricing; slab scanning and graded pricing are unavailable.

Scanning cards

How do I take a good photo for the scanner?

  • Lay the card flat on a plain, dark surface.
  • Use soft, indirect light — avoid direct sun and overhead glare on glossy or foil cards.
  • Fill the frame with the card, front side, straight on.
  • A penny sleeve is fine; a top-loader with heavy glare is not.

The scanner reads text on the card, so the clearer the year, set name, and card number, the better the match.

Can I scan graded cards (PSA, BGS, SGC, CGC)?

Slab scanning and graded-card pricing are currently unavailable. The scanner is intended for raw cards. Existing saved slab entries remain in your collection and count toward the same 50-card limit.

Can the scanner tell if my card is fake?

No — Collect Valor identifies cards and prices them; it is not an authentication service. If a card is a known counterfeit design, the identification may not match cleanly, which is a hint but not proof. For Pokémon cards, check the font, the back's color, and the card's weight and feel; for high-value cards, a grading company is the only real authentication.

Does it work on vintage cards?

Yes. Early Pokémon sets (Base Set, Jungle, Fossil) identify well because the text is clear. Very obscure regional or oddball sets may need a manual name search to find the exact match.

What if it identifies the wrong card?

Tap Wrong card or no price? Search by name, type the Pokémon plus any details you know (year, set, card number), and choose your exact card from the results. Prices update instantly. Different card printings are the most common mix-up because the base card and its parallels share a photo.

Does it work on desktop and phone?

Both. On a phone you can take the photo directly; on desktop you can upload a photo or type a card name. Nothing to install.

Grading

Is my card worth grading?

Collect Valor does not currently provide graded prices. Compare recent sales for the exact card and possible grade, then account for grading, shipping, and selling fees. A particular grade or profit is never guaranteed.

Is PSA grading worth it?

That depends on the card, its condition, the grade received, and the total fees. Graded pricing is currently unavailable in Collect Valor; research comparable sales before deciding.

PSA vs BGS vs SGC vs CGC — which should I use?

Compare each grading company’s services, fees, turnaround times, and recent sales for your exact card. Collect Valor does not currently provide a comparison of graded prices.

How much does card grading cost?

Fees change with each company's service levels and the card's declared value — typically $20–$40 for standard service on modest cards, more for higher-value tiers and faster turnaround, plus shipping both ways. Check the grading company's current price sheet and plug the numbers into the calculator.

What is a PSA 10 vs raw price difference?

The difference depends on the exact card and current market. Collect Valor does not currently supply graded prices or graded-to-raw multipliers.

Pokémon cards

How do I check a Pokémon card’s value?

Photograph the front of the card and scan it. We read the Pokémon name, set symbol, card number (for example 4/102), and rarity, then show the market value. If you'd rather type, search the name plus the card number.

What do the Pokémon card rarity symbols mean?

Bottom corner of the card: a circle is common, a diamond uncommon, a star rare. Holofoil rares, ultra rares (ex, GX, V, VMAX, VSTAR), full arts, alternate arts, and secret rares (a card number higher than the set size) sit above that. Rarity is one of the biggest drivers of value, and it's why two cards of the same Pokémon can differ by hundreds of dollars.

1st Edition vs Unlimited — does it matter?

A lot. A "1st Edition" stamp on the left side of older Wizards-era cards can multiply the value many times over. Make sure the stamp is visible in your photo and check that the matched card says 1st Edition before trusting a price.

How can I tell if a Pokémon card is fake?

Common tells: blurry or off-color printing, wrong font or spacing in the text, an unusually thin or glossy feel, a back that is too light or too dark blue, and prices that seem too good to be true. Hold it next to a card you know is real. When the money matters, have it graded — grading companies authenticate as part of the process.

Selling cards

How do I price a whole card collection?

Scan cards individually and save them to your collection. Collect Valor totals available saved values and refreshes saved Pokémon prices daily. Cards without a verified price are excluded from the total.

How do I sell Pokémon cards for the most money?

Know the value first (scan it), sell the high-value cards individually and the rest in lots, photograph them well, and price against recent sales rather than asking prices. For cards worth several hundred dollars or more, grading before selling often pays for itself.

Your collection

Can I save my cards and track my collection’s value?

Free collectors and members can save up to 50 cards total. The Collection page shows saved cards and their current values. Saved Pokémon prices refresh daily. Existing slab entries count toward the same limit; there is no separate slab allowance.

What is the Showcase?

Star your favorite cards to add them to your Showcase, and they appear in the Community binders where other collectors can flip through them. Only cards you star are shown; the rest of your collection stays private.

Is there a watchlist or price alerts?

Members can add cards to their watchlist and use Refresh prices to request updated Pokémon prices. Automatic price alerts are not currently available.

Can I sell cards through Collect Valor?

No — we are a card scanner and price checker, not a marketplace. Use the value we show to price your card wherever you sell.

Membership & privacy

How much does Collect Valor cost, and can I cancel?

Your first 35 scans are free with no account. Membership is $8.99 per month — an early-beta founding-member rate you keep for as long as you stay a member. Checkout is handled by Stripe, and you can cancel anytime.

Do I need an account?

Not to try it. Guests get 35 free scans. Members unlock with the email they subscribed with — no password to remember.

Are my card photos stored or shared?

A photo is used to identify the card. It is only stored if you save the card to your collection, and it is only visible to other people if you put that card in your Showcase. We never sell your data. See our privacy policy.

How do I contact Collect Valor?

Email info@collectvalor.com — questions about a card that won't match, membership and billing, or deleting your account and collection. We're a small team and we read every message.

How is Collect Valor different from CollX or Ludex?

Collect Valor runs in your browser or as an installed PWA. It offers photo identification, Pokémon price matching, a private collection, and optional public showcases in Community binders. Your first 35 scans are free.
